Obituary for Alice M. Johnson

Alice M. Johnson, age 102, a 55 year resident of Oak Park, IL, passed away on Wednesday July 15, 2015 at the Victory Centre of River Woods supportive living community. Alice was born Alice Ehlers to William and Clara Ehlers nee Geib on June 7, 1913 in the small, rural farm town of Henderson, MN. After graduating from high school, Alice's dream was to move to The Big City. To that end, she enrolled in nursing school and upon graduation was offered a nursing position at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. Soon after arriving in Chicago she meet a handsome young man, John Johnson, who had likewise left has hometown in Wisconsin to seek a better life in Chicago. They married on November 17, 1938. During WWII, while John was in the U.S. Navy, Alice continued working as a nurse. Following the war, they raised a family together in Oak Park. Alice is survived by her children, Jacqueline (John) Gray and Bill (Rosemary) Johnson; her grandson, Bryan Johnson; and her sister, Susie (Delbert) Payne. After the children were grown, Alice went to work for OPRF High School as an administrative assistant. Each semester she would help schedule (without the aid of computers) roughly 4,000 students into all the classes they needed to graduate. She retired in 1980. After her loving husband of seventy years died, Alice moved to Victory Centre of River Woods - where she continued to thrive for an additional six years. The accompanying photo was taken during her 102nd birthday party. Private interment will be held in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
