Obituary for Catherine Fitzsimmons

Catherine "kT" FitzSimmons, a lifelong Oak Park area resident, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Catherine was the daughter of local philanthropists "Doc" Bill and Phyllis Fitzsimmons of Oak Park. She graduated from St. Edmund School ('70) and Trinity High School (74'). Catherine received her Bachelors of Science in Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Detroit in 1978. Catherine began her professional career as a chemical engineer working for Amoco in Houston, TX from 1979 until 1985. While in Texas, Catherine earned her law degree. Upon returning to the Chicago area, Catherine practiced law as an Assistant Public Defender for the Illinois Appellate Court in Ottawa, IL. Always expanding her professional repertoire, Catherine completed DePaul University's post graduate Computer Career Program in 1999. She had an accomplished career in information systems at Allstate Insurance as a mainframe programmer and later as a business analyst. At the time of her passing she was a business analyst with Apex Systems, Inc. out of their Chicago Area office. That was the professional side of Catherine. kT, as most of her friends called her, was a voracious science fiction reader, having consumed all of the great classics as well as the up and coming authors of the present. She was well known within the Chicago area and Houston area fandom communities. A tireless volunteer, kT helped organize several science fiction conventions including the annual Windycon hosted by ISFiC (Illinois Science Fiction in Illinois). Catherine M. FitzSimmons, namesake of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, The Lily of the Mohawks, dear daughter of the late William V. Fitzsimmons M.D. and the late Mary Phyllis Fitzsimmons, nee McGrath; cherished sister of Joseph T. FitzSimmons, Mary M. Fitzsimmons, Venessa Fitzsimmons, Brendan (Selena Brown) Fitzsimmons, M.D., Nora (the late Scott) Armstrong, Tom FitzSimmons, Regina (Todd Olson) FitzSimmons, and the late Martha Marie Fitzsimmons; loving aunt of Rafael Fitzsimmons, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Patrick, and Daniel (Victoria) Armstrong, Brian and Danielle FitzSimmons, Harry, Annie, and Cassie Fitzsimmons, Madeleine, Williams, and John Olson; fond great-aunt of Finn Armstrong; affectionate cousin of many. Visitation will be held Monday, January 25, 2016 from 4:00 to 9:00 PM at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion Street, Oak Park, IL. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at St. Edmund Church, 188 South Oak Park Avenue, Oak Park, IL, (Please meet at church) followed immediately by a Committal Service in the chapel of Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL.��
