Obituary for Catherine S. "Bette" Mitchell

Bette Mitchell (n�e Sheffield), 92, was a longtime resident of Oak Park and River Forest and worked at First National Bank of Chicago's Oak Park branch (now Chase) for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents Phillip and Gladys Sheffield, siblings George and Phyllis, and her husband of nearly 50 years, Alan. Born and raised in Stonington, CT, Bette moved to Chicago in the early 1950s. She worked as a clerk at Encyclopedia Britannica, where she met Alan R. Mitchell and the two were married in 1954, settling in an apartment on N. Kenilworth in Oak Park. The Mitchells purchased a home in River Forest in the mid-1970s, where they lived until their deaths. Bette worked at Pioneer Press and then at First National Bank, until her retirement in 1986. She was a longtime member of First Church of Christ-Scientist in River Forest, where she actively volunteered for many years. Bette is survived by ten nieces and nephews, more than 15 great-nieces and -nephews and many great, great-nieces and -nephews. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 27, 4-6 p.m., concluding with remembrances, at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral HomeInurnment will be private.
