Consuelo (GarcÃa) Guerrero, 87, of Chicago, died of heart failure on December 27, 2016. She is the beloved wife of the late Rodolfo Guerrero; loving mother of Rodolfo (the late Magdalena), José (Aurora), Berta Diaz, Juan, Rosa (Alberto) Salcedo, Jesús (Monica) and Trinidad Guerrero; cherished grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of 22; dear sister of Catarino (Eva) GarcÃa and Ana (the late Jesús) Hernández. Consuelo was preceded in death by six other brothers and sisters.
Born and raised in San José de la Boca, Durango, Consuelo studied at San Mateo, Franciscan Convent, in Sombrerete, Zacatecas, México. She was a seamstress in her family’s boutique. One day, a gentleman walked into the family store for a custom suit. The gentleman was Rodolfo Guerrero and would later become her husband.
After marriage, Consuelo and Rodolfo moved to Los Cerritos, Durango, where Consuelo would become the pioneer woman that many knew her as. She was revered in her community; she was the town’s ambassador and nurse. Consuelo, in her high heels, was the only female member in the chamber of commerce. She owned and managed her own grocery store, and led the establishment of the town’s telegraphs and later brought telephone lines to town.
In 1972, Consuelo moved to Chicago with her seven children to join Rodolfo who had moved to the United States for work. She gracefully transitioned into the role of grandmother while working and attending school. An avid reader and excellent cook, Consuelo was beloved by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent the rest of her years taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
