Obituary for Donald Wayne Moravec

Dr. Donald W. Moravec passed away peacefully at the age of 71 on April 21, 2017 surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born on January 22, 1946 in Berwyn, IL, to parents Joseph V. and Wilma B. Moravec. Don married Eliza (Keating) Moravec on May 1, 1971 in Oak Park, IL. He and Eliza resided in Oak Park for 46 years, raising their two children as the second generation in their loving, historic, family home.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Joseph V. and Wilma B. Moravec, his brother Richard J. Moravec and his niece Jennifer M. Moravec. Don is survived by his wife Eliza; his children Christopher (Amy) Moravec of LaGrange, IL;, and Eliza Ann (Kevin) Pate of River Forest, IL; his two granddaughters Ellenore and Charlotte Moravec of LaGrange, IL; brothers Edwin A. (Susan) Moravec of Plainfield, IL; and Rev. Dr. Joseph C. (Joy) Moravec of Urbandale, IA; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and dear friends.

Don began his professional career at Downers Grove North High School, spanning more than three decades as a physical education teacher, football coach, wrestling coach, girls' badminton coach, girls' tennis coach, and finally as Dean of Students. As a graduate of Downers Grove North in 1964, he often had the privilege and the unique opportunity to instruct and coach many of the children of his own classmates.

Don received his Bachelor of Arts degree from North Central College in Naperville, IL, where he played football, played in a rock band, and met the love of his life, Eliza Keating. Don continued his education, obtaining his Master of Arts with emphasis in Communication Science degree from Governors State University in University Park, IL, and his Doctor of Education degree from University of Sarasota in Sarasota, FL.

After retiring from Downers Grove North High School in 2001, Don worked for his wife's company, Keating of Chicago, where he wore many hats, helping out wherever he could. Besides working, Don led a very spiritual life serving as a faithful vestry member and senior warden of the Christ Episcopal Church in River Forest, IL. The church was an integral part of his life and he committed himself to doing whatever the church requested of him. Not only did he work and serve his church, but he also coached a very successful Women’s Tennis Team at North Central College for many years.

Don enjoyed life to the fullest and had many hobbies which also kept him very active. He took annual fishing trips to Canada, he went on many golfing and skiing trips, and he enjoyed spending weekends with his family and friends, especially his two granddaughters, at his summer home on Lake Michigan. He will be remembered for his loving nature, his laugh, and his ability to make others happy.

Visitation will be from 2:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Drechsler Brown & Williams, 203 S Marion St, Oak Park. There will be a memorial service at 3:00p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Grace Episcopal Church, 924 Lake St, Oak Park, IL. A reception will immediately follow at the Cheney Mansion, 220 North Euclid Avenue, Oak Park, IL. All of Don’s loved ones are welcome.
