Obituary for Dorothy Barber

Dorothy Grosser Barber passed away on January 3rd at home at the Oak Park Arms, after a long and fruitful life. She passed away peacefully at age 104, surrounded by her family. She was a lifelong member of Forest Park Baptist Church and supported it all her life with her tithes and talents. She was born to Fred and Lillian Grosser at their home on Thomas St. in Oak Park on December 9, 1910. Her life extended from the horse-and-buggy age through space travel and our own modern computer age. She graduated Oak Park - River Forest High School in 1928. She majored in French at Oberlin College, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1932. She studied for a year in Germany, where she met her future husband, Hollis, whom she married in 1937. She obtained her Master's degree in German at University of Chicago in 1934. She went to San Diego in 1942 with her Navy husband, and then spent the war years in River Forest until he returned in 1945. She and Hollis raised their two sons, Hollis Jr. and Fred in Oak Park, later moving to River Forest where they remained until his death in 2005. She taught foreign languages at Oak Park - River Forest High School and Proviso East High School, and concluded her teaching career at University of Illinois, Chicago. She and Hollis were happily married for 67 years. She will be remembered for her devotion to church and family. She is survived by sons Hollis Jr. (Rhoda) and Fred (Carole), grandchildren James and Mary, Jennifer, David, Jonathan, Julie, Kimberly, and Michael, and great-grandchildren William, Caroline, Joshua, Ryan, and Olivia, and devoted care-giver Melody. We will sorely miss her loving presence, but trust in God that we will be reunited, in God's good time. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be sent to either: Forest Park Baptist Church, 133 Harlem Ave., Forest Park Illinois 60130 or Christ for the City, Int'l. (Please designate Carpio Ministries), PO Box 390395, Omaha, NE 68139. A Memorial visitation will be at Grace Episcopal Church, 924 Lake St., Oak Park, Illinois, on Jan. 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM, followed by service at 3:00 PM. Interment will be private.
