Obituary for Dr. Yam Shun Tong

Dr. Tong was born on December 29, 1948, in Hong Kong. He was the OB/GYN department Chairman of PCC Wellness at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, IL where he practiced for over 15 years. He received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from University of Illinois at Chicago, a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in biochemistry, and a medical degree from The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was, in fact, a double doctorate.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy, a Physician’s Assistant at Doctors on Wheels in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.
His daughter San is a Social Media Manager for the Video on Demand streaming service of the TV network Hallmark Channel in Los Angeles. His son Kevin is a Mechanical Engineer for the leading energy consultancy, 360 Energy Group in Chicago.
Of his two brothers and 5 sisters he is survived by 3 remaining siblings.
Dr. Tong was an immensely dedicated physician, offering his care to expecting mothers and countless patients with the most compassionate bedside manner.
Dr. Tong worked tirelessly, ending days in the clinic with evening call hours for his obstetric patients. He always put his patients first, whether during a busy clinic day or even on his scheduled days off.
He had a reputation for rushing into the office to see patients that presented acutely, providing either immediate care or the appropriate referral to meet their needs. Unless he was out of town, Dr. Tong considered himself on-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
His legacy lives on in the flourishing and boundless lives of those he touched and the immeasurable heart of the community he called family.
He was a Chicagoan thru and thru, and a securely indoctrinated fanatic of the championship 85’ Bears.

A Memorial gathering will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday September 29 at the Carleton Hotel in Oak Park. Additional parking can be found at the Drechsler, Brown & Williams lot around the corner from The Carleton Hotel. Black attire is discouraged
