Obituary for Edward H. Hegarty

Edward H. Hegarty, age 89, longtime resident of Oak Park passed away October 20, 2018. He was born and raised in Chicago. During high school Edward delivered gas bills and eventually moved on to reading gas meters. Walking great distances was often part of the job. At one point, his route was along Wabansia, from Western all the way to Harlem Avenue – about 6 miles! Due to this job, he could tell you where almost any address in Chicago was located.

Music has always been part of Edward’s life. He played accordion until 1947 and was even a contestant on a radio show in the mid 1940’s. He received his B.A. and his M.A. in music education, both from Chicago Musical College (part of Roosevelt University) and directed and sang in the church choir at St. Angela Church in Chicago and sang with the Tower Chorale. He was a long-time member of St. Giles Catholic Church. Edward appreciated opera music and attended many performances at Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also enjoyed playing piano through the years and listening to classical music. Edward continued to expand on his piano technique, once retired, by taking private piano lessons to the end of his life. He played in many recitals over the years with the most recent one being within the last month.

Edward met Mary Frances and they married in 1953. Their home nest eventually filled up with eleven children. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Traveling has always been something Edward and Mary Frances enjoyed. While raising their family, they took their children on yearly summer camping trips eventually visiting just about every state and national park between Illinois and the west coast and even some to the south and east. When the nest emptied, they tried their hand at some international travel which they also enjoyed.

Edward’s career in education started in the 1960’s with teaching driver’s education which he loved. Then he began teaching in the upper grades, afterward becoming an assistant principal. In 1964 he became a principal and during his career, which lasted until his retirement in 1990, he was principal of three different schools -Michael Faraday being the last and longest (22 years). Edward was glad to be able to stay in touch with some fellow educators and even very recently gathered socially with some of them!

In addition to his many interests, Edward volunteered at the Oak Park Arms to assist people with their taxes for many years. He kept his mind active by doing the crossword, Sudoku and by memorizing long pieces of piano music, all of which he enjoyed. He was also physically active, being part of a deep water aerobics class at the local YMCA and enjoyed interacting with his classmates/fellow participants. His faith, wife and family have always been the center of his life and he will be sorely missed by both family and friends. Beloved husband of Mary Frances nee Mulhern; loving father of Maureen (Dan) Kruszynski, RoseAnn (Jim) Vonesh, Kathleen (Robert) Burdett, Edward (Cindy), Michael (Diane), Mary Pat (the late Joe) Williams, Daniel, Patrick (Catherine), Mary Rose (Gerard) Crimmins, Terrence, and Christopher (Amy Nelson) Hegarty; cherished grandfather of Megan and Jim (Kristina) Vonesh, Victoria Burdett, Diane (Brian) Bell and Natalie Burdett, Naomi and Aidan Hegarty, Logan and Tristan Williams, Ryan and Shannon Hegarty, Erica and Stephanie Hegarty, Jared and Christopher Crimmins; cherished great-grandfather of Matthew, Caileigh, Grace, Sammy and Allison, and Kaylan, Lia, Myles and Neo; dear brother of Patricia (Richard) Sharp and the late Ann (James) Malone and Mary Rose Hegarty; fond uncle and great-uncle of many.
