Obituary for Elaine M. Sorber

Elaine M. Sorber, RN, age 65, of Oak Park passed away on May 24, 2018 at Loyola University Medical Center.
Born in 1953, Elaine Mog was the last of 4 siblings in the family of Kenneth and Helen Mog of Euclid Ohio. Dad was a printer, who owned his own shop; Mom was an optometrist’s assistant.
Elaine graduated from Euclid High School in 1971. She worked her way through St. John College/Ursuline at factory jobs and Elaine graduated from Ursuline with a nursing degree.
As an Ohio RN, Elaine worked in a variety of medical settings. Her first position was third shift at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals orthopedic unit; later as a nurse and certified counselor at the Cleveland Clinic Substance Abuse Treatment Unit.
Elaine was also involved in peace and social justice activities, participating in numerous demonstrations and meetings. She was a board member of Euclid Community Concerns and worked on open housing issues where Oak Park, IL was held up as an example.
Elaine’s love of the outdoors was nurtured early through participation at a summer camp where she hiked and rode horses. Elaine loved going on backpacking trips with her Sister Kathleen. Elaine and her Mom and siblings made several trips to Kiawah Island, SC, during which Elaine fished and sunned. Always the most daring of the Mog children she parasailed as the rest of her Mog family watched in horror and awe.
It was through the Cleveland Sierra Club that she met Russ Sorber where they went on numerous Sierra Club outings including ski trips in the Appalachian Mountains.
Elaine and Russ married in 1989 and put down roots in Oak Park, IL. In Illinois Elaine had long nursing employment at Rush/Anchor HMO in Oak Park where she worked in adult triage. Elaine also had long employment at Elmhurst Clinic where she worked in outpatient pulmonary. Most recently Elaine was employed as an adult triage nurse at Franciscan Alliance Hospitals.
Elaine and Russ were active in Austin Blvd Christian Church where Elaine had her stage debut in the Austin Blvd Church Cabaret. Among other things Elaine portrayed a Russian waitress, surprising us all with her comedic timing.
In 1997, Elaine and Russ began attending Pilgrim Church where Elaine and other church members were also volunteers at West Suburban PADS.
Son Matthew was born in 1992 and Matthew was the apple of Elaine’s eye. Elaine and Matt participated in the Parenthesis parent/child group which was the source of several lifelong friends. As Matthew grew older, Elaine enjoyed watching Matthew play baseball including baseball tournaments all over the Midwest and in Cooperstown NY. Elaine recently savored Matt’s undergraduate and graduate degree ceremonies from the University of Illinois.
Elaine’s love of the outdoors continued with camping trips to YMCA family camp in Wisconsin with family and friends. In 2016 Russ and Elaine enjoyed a trip to Alaska where she watched humpback whales and bears in the wild.
In August 2012, Elaine began a battle against central nervous system lymphoma, a rare form of brain cancer. The battle included, 23 infections, more than 20 hospitalizations, 15 cycles of chemotherapy and ER visits too numerous to count over the past 5.5 years. With the help of many physicians, medical staff, friends, family and caretakers who became family, Elaine fought courageously until the very end. Russ and Elaine’s extended family are very grateful for all the support through her prolonged illness. The anti-cancer saying “No one fights alone” was never truer than for Elaine.
Elaine is survived by her husband Russ and her son Matthew. Elaine was the sister of David (Gloria) Mog, Kathleen (Stuart) Greenberg and the late Kenneth Mog Jr. and sister-in-law of Mary K. (Peter Kropf) Sorber; fond aunt of Justin (Amanda Fuller) Mog and Joel (Madeline Ostrander) Mog, and Aaron (Sarah) Greenberg; daughter of the late Kenneth Sr. and Helen Mog.
Memorial visitation is Friday June 8, 2018 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park. Memorial service 2:30 p.m. Saturday June 9, 2018 at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 460 Lake St., Oak Park.
