Obituary for Florence Louise Rome

Florence Louise Rome nee Cochrane, age 98, former resident of Oak Park and River Forest passed away May 4, 2016 in Chicago. She was born in Merchantville, NJ on April 19, 1918 to Ira and Florence Cochrane and raised in NY. Louise Rome has devoted her life to environmental advocacy and her family. Her marriage to Samuel Rome, native of Chicago, in 1943 brought her to the Chicago area where she spent the remainder of her life. Educated as a registered nurse, Mrs. Rome spent much of her adult life as a champion for the environment at all levels of government. She was active in the Illinois league of women voters since 1962, serving as their Environmental Quality Chairman in the late '60 and early 70's. It was in this capacity, and due in part to her fight for strip mining controls in the state, that she was present at the President Carter's signing of laws controlling strip mining activity. She was also active in the Lake Michigan Federation and Clean Air Coordinating Commission, agricultural advisor to the EPA, and appointed to President Nixon's Water Pollution Control Advisory Board in 1970. In 1973, Mrs Rome was appointed as the official state observer to the Metropolitan Sanitary District. Her involvement in local politics was equally important to her as she served on the River Forest Zoning Board of Appeals. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel in 2002. Mrs. Rome is survived by her sons, Robert (Kimberly), David (Elizabeth), and Donald (Tracy), her grandchildren Alyssa, Shale, Bryce, Devin, McKensie, Bryan, Eric and David and five great-grandchildren, as well as nieces Vicky Cromer and Nancy Cochrane and nephews Michael Rome, Bruce Cochrane and Richard Batey. Private services had been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to your favorite charity are appreciated.
