Obituary for Genevieve S. Krawchuk

Genevieve S. Krawchuk, 90, of Oak Park, died on September 11, 2019. Genevieve was born in Chicago, the third child of John and Mary Kaczmarek, sister to the late John (Alice) and the late William Kaczmarek and to a sister who died in infancy. Genevieve graduated from Carl Schurz High School and Wilbur Wright Junior College. She worked for Teletype Corporation and traveled the country as a trainer for new equipment.

A Frank Sinatra bobby-soxer in the 1940’s, Genevieve had a love of music and was an excellent dancer. She met her husband, the late Richard R. Krawchuk, on a blind date at the Aragon Ballroom, arranged by a friend who was Richard’s sister-in-law. They married in 1953, and purchased their Oak Park home in 1959.

Genevieve was the mother of Jody (Randall) Soland, Richard A. Krawchuk, Robert Krawchuk, and Keith (Nancy) Krawchuk, the grandmother of Zoë and Jonathan Krawchuk, mother-in-law of the late Dick Kreiss, and fond aunt of many.

She loved animals, adopted beloved dogs and cats over the years, and contributed to animal welfare charities.

Genevieve was known for her beautiful smile and welcoming, hospitable nature, hosting memorable parties and holiday dinners. She loved to bake for her family and friends, and, among neighborhood children, her chocolate chip cookies were legendary.

Genevieve was an active member of the Four Freshmen (jazz vocal group) Society, enjoying the group’s annual convention/reunion held in a different city each year. She and Richard belonged to the Senior Polka Association and the Polish Roman Catholic Union, where Genevieve served as Treasurer in both clubs.

Genevieve was also passionate about Chicago sports. She and Richard were lifelong Chicago Cubs fans, and held season tickets to the Chicago Bears for many years. Genevieve was especially fond of the Chicago Blackhawks, and she relished their Stanley Cup titles.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 12th, from 9:00 to 9:45 am at St. Catherine of Sienna-St. Lucy Church, 38 N. Austin Blvd., Oak Park, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:00 am. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Fried’s Cat Shelter (friedscatshelter.org) are appreciated.
