The young couple settled in Chicago in the 1960’s and had six (6) children. Jones became known as the “alley mechanic” who would repair cars behind his home every weekend.

He later married his second wife, Cynthia Long - Jones. The two resided in Oak Park raising his new son, and three children from his first marriage. He opened his own business, Near North Auto Repair in the 1970’s near Clybourn and North Avenue. He quickly became well known to hundreds of people in Bucktown, Wicker Park, Park West and Lincoln Park area, for over four decades. During the 1990’s he moved his repair shop to north Elston Avenue, where his hard work continued until he transitioned.

He is proceeded in death by his sisters, Ida Mae, Rosetta, Peggy Anne (Dolly Mae), and Irene and his only brother, Joseph “Buck” Jones. His daughter, Janita. His three grandchildren, James Earl Jones II, James Herbert Jones, and Isabelle Schuyler-Sue Jones.
