Obituary for James "Jim" R. Marshall

James (Jim) R. Marshall, 95, passed peacefully away on Wednesday March 24 at his daughter’s home and surrounded by family.

Jim was born in 1926 to Anna (Driscoll) and John Marshall of Dalton MA. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst earning a degree in Chemistry and a masters in Food Technology. It was in college that he met the love of his life, Alice O’Neil Marshall. They were married in 1951 and lived happily together for 65 years until her death in 2017. As long time residents of Oak Park, they raised seven children there. It was his job with American Can Co. that brought him to Oak Park from Tampa FL. In addition, he worked for Home Juice Company until he started his own juice business and an ambulance company which he ran successfully for almost twenty years. Jim and his wife were also avid golfers and could often be seen playing at Columbus Park and the Oak Park Country Club.

As a life-long Democrat, he believed in helping people, especially through education. He volunteered for the Community Chest (United Way), and was on the Board of Directors of the West Cook YMCA and Y Camp Douglass. In addition to being an active Rotarian, Jim endowed a scholarship fund for students attending his alma mater, UMass-Amherst and established college scholarships for the staff at Brookdale Oak Park where he and Alice resided for many years. He was also a long time member and generous benefactor of the St. Catherine - St. Lucy Parish.

Jim leaves behind his children Mary and (Peter Blanc), Frances Marshall, John Marshall (deceased), Anne Marshall and (Angel Kustief), Jim and (Kathi Marshall), Tom Marshall and Paul Marshall (deceased), twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Jim also remained close to his two sisters back east, Margaret Signer of Albany NY (deceased) and Mary Shultis of Pittsfield MA. Memorial donations made to the St. Catherine - St. Lucy School (https://www.catherinelucy.org/) or the Rotary Foundation in memory of James Marshall are appreciated.
