Obituary for Jane E. Hedges

Jane E. Hedges nee Schiff, age 70, a 35 year resident of Oak Park died on September 13th in her Oak Park home after a year long battle with cancer. Jane is survived by her husband, John Hedges, children Michael (Julie Dunn) and David, and her grandchildren Brady, Jack and Dylan. Jane was born and raised in Evansville, IN with her brother Dr. Jon Schiff and sister Judy Thoman. Jane went on to graduate from Indiana University with both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Education. While at Indiana University she met her beloved husband of 47 years, John. After living in Indiana, Iowa and California Jane and John settled into Oak Park with their sons Michael and David. Jane was a loving grandmother to her three grandsons; Brady, Jack and Dylan attending music classes, school performances and t-ball games. Jane and John spent many a summer weekend at their second residence in Wall Lake, IN where they share time with extended family members; brother in laws David (Ginger) and Robert (Barbara) and many nieces and nephews. This home was open to all friends and family, often times more than it was built to hold. Jane worked her entire career in the field of education and counseling, retiring from East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, IL after 25 years working as a guidance counselor. The impact Jane made on the students she worked with was felt through continued communication with them throughout the end of her life. In retirement Jane donated her time and energy to multiple charities in the Oak Park area, including The Hephzibah Home and The Economy Shop of Oak Park. Jane worked tirelessly on behalf of these organizations to raise funds, bring awareness and recruit other community members to participate in the programs. Jane was an active member of St. Edmunds Parish where she served on the school board, worked to raise funds for the church and school, volunteered as a wedding coordinator and as a minister of care bringing communion to the sick. Anyone who was blessed enough to know Jane will remember her for her love of life, family and being with others. Jane never passed an on an opportunity to serve others in an attempt to bring love and joy to anyone she came into contact with. Memorial Visitation will be Tuesday, September 15th from 3 to 9pm at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home located at 203 S. Marion Street in Oak Park.
