Obituary for Jean A. Omara

Jean A. Omara, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on the morning of May 23, 2018. Born May 12, 1927 to Tom and Berdena Omara at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Jean was a long time resident of Oak Park and a 1945 graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School. She was a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Jean was a long time employee of Booz Allen Hamilton in Chicago. Upon her retirement, Jean served as the associate director of the Oak Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce and then worked for Pilgrim Realty. Jean was committed to the Oak Park River Forest Community, including many years of service to West Suburban Hospital and Zonta International. Jean was also a devoted and faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church in River Forest, as well as a member of Episcopal Church Women. Later in life she resided at Beacon Hill Retirement Center in Lombard, Illinois.

Jean is preceded in death by her sister Marjorie (the late Bob) Maxwell.

Jean is survived by her loving nephew, Tom (Deborah) Maxwell; loving great niece, Kathleen Maxwell; adored cousin of Virginia (Walter) Bell, their children and grandchildren, and Susan (Richard) Conrad.

Jean never asked for anything but was someone who constantly gave of her time and talents.

A note from Kathleen: Auntie Jean passed peacefully early this morning surrounded by Mom, Dad, and myself. It’s a small blessing that she waited for all of us to be there. In those quiet final hours, we told her stories about her beautiful life, sang to her, prayed with her, hugged and kissed her, and wiped away her tears.

While we will miss her dearly, we are so thankful that she no longer has to struggle with the memory issues that so frustratingly took not only her ability to remember, but also to express herself and to live independently. The silver lining is that she never forgot us—her love and gratitude were deep & strong.

There’s no way, though, we could ever repay Auntie Jean for everything she has done for us and for countless others. She was the most selfless and gracious person we have ever known. Her final gift was to donate her brain to the Rush Memory Clinic so that researchers can find cures for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Visitation Friday, May 25th, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park.
