Obituary for Jim Strickland

Famed Boxing Cutman, Jim Strickland, Exits the Ring

Jim Strickland grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Kansas University in 1954 with a degree in pharmacology. After graduation, Jim moved to Maywood, IL, and later to Oak Park, IL, where he and his wife, Deanna, raised their five children: James, Jay, Jeffery, Deanna and Dori. Jim’s first career was as a pharmacist, owning and managing three drugstores on Chicago’s southside. Jim simultaneously supported the African-American community through his roles in the NAACP, Chatham Business Association and Maywood Family Fun Fest production team. In his 40s he began a successful career as a boxing manager, trainer, and world renowned cutman. Known as “Strick” in the boxing community, he was the Chicago Golden Gloves head trainer for 10 years. He trained three world champion boxers; William Guthrie, Lee Roy Murphy and David Diaz, and worked as a cutman for 25 world champions (including Evander Holyfield) and over 75 world title fights. During his travels across six continents, he had lunch with boxing enthusiast Nelson Mandela. In 2016, he was inducted into the Illinois Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2019 he was inducted into the National Boxing Hall of Fame and awarded the Golden Gloves Lifetime Achievement Award. Jim shared his diverse passions with his family, taking them to boxing matches as well as blues and jazz clubs, Interlochen National Music Camp to enjoy classical music and plays at the ETA Creative Arts, Goodman and Steppenwolf theaters. He cultivated an encyclopedic knowledge of restaurants and loved revisiting his favorites, such as Manny’s, The Berghoff, MacArhur’s, and Al’s Beef in Chicago, Brennan’s in New Orleans and The Stage Deli in New York. Jim lived a rich and rewarding 90 years before passing on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. He will be dearly missed by his family and the boxing community around the world. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Chicago Golden Gloves in Jim Strickland’s name.
