Obituary for Joann M. Moles

Joann M. Moles nee Miller, age 98, of Oak Park; beloved wife of the late Joseph B. Moles; loving mother of Pamela (James) Mulshine, Richard (Heidi), Nancy (Thomas) McGarry and Betsy (Jay) Tharp; cherished grandmother of Christine, Michael, Laura (Wilson Karalus) and Eric Mulshine, Joseph (Abigail) and Heather (Mitchell) Riederer, John McGarry, and Matthew (Lauren), Emily and Ellen Tharp; delighted great-grandmother of Otto James Karalus, Rowan and Willow Moles, Taylor and Jillian Riederer; dear sister of Richard (the late Helen) Miller.

Joann earned a Masters in Entomology at U of Illinois including the honor of having a species of corn borers, which she identified, subsequently named after her. She then went on to complete her medical training at U of Illinois, followed by obstetrics and gynecology training at Harper Hospital in Detroit and finally entered clinical practice at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. She was a long-time volunteer at a number of organizations notably including decades of service for the Infant Welfare Society. After being stationed in Morocco with Joe as he served in the Air Force in Rabat during the Korean War, Joann and Joe continued to travel the world with their family. Travels included extensive excursions across the American heartlands as well as southern and central Africa, Asia and South America.

Joann was an engaging conversationalist, avid bridge player, and talented gardener who sustained cultivars passed down to her from her mother. Private interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. A public memorial will be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army (salvationarmyusa.org) are appreciated.
