Obituary for John H. Andersen

John Hevle Andersen, age 87, of River Forest; beloved husband of Gene nee Gambill; loving father of Kari Andersen (John) Shipley III, John H. Jr. and Russell C. (Deborah) Andersen and Kristen Andersen (Cliff) Wilewski; cherished grandfather of John A. IV, Walker G. and Matthew A. Shipley, and David, Daniel and Thomas Wilewski; dear brother of the late Alfred N. Andersen and brother-in-law of Charles F. (Shirley) Gambill. Mr. Andersen also leaves behind his dear nieces, nephews and many friends. John Andersen was born 4/27/27 to Ethel and Alfred Andersen. John spent most of his youth between Medina Country Club under the tutelage of Tommy Armour and their summer home at Lake Geneva. After his Navy service, he attended University of Miami on a golf scholarship and joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He joined the family company, Andersen Engineering, eventually becoming President. In 1953 John married the love of his life, Gene Gambill. John became a top amateur golfer winning many championships throughout the Midwest including 6 time club champion of Oak Park Country Club. He qualified and played the 1959 and 1961 US Amateur Championship and the British Amateur Championship of 1963. As his eyesight diminished, Johns' interests merged with his wife's love of horses, enthusiastically cheering on his wife and daughters at Saddlebred horse shows. He served as President of Mid America Horse Show Association and Hooved Animal Humane Society in the 80's. Gene and John were both very active in Lyric Opera and the rebuilding of the Globe Theatre in London. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of River Forest, 7551 Quick Ave., River Forest, IL. In lieu of flowers, suggested donations to: Hooved Animal and Humane Society (hahs.org) or the Lyric Opera of Chicago (lyricopera.org) are appreciated.
