Obituary for John Joseph "JJ" Flavin

John Joseph Flavin (J.J.) passed away on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2nd, 2014. J.J. was born in Chicago at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1984 but spent most of his early years in Fort Lauderdale. He attended grammar school at St. Coleman's Catholic School and graduated in 2003 from Cardinal Gibbons High School. J.J. attended Florida Gulf Coast University and graduated in 2007 with a degree in communications and political science. He was a lifetime member of the alumni association. He continued his education with a semester at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. After graduation, he backpacked extensively with several close high school friends. J.J. loved traveling with his family. They spent time together in Paris, Brussels, Dublin and New Market, England where the family had business. J.J. returned to Fort Lauderdale after spending time in Chicago and became a manager at Bahia Cabana Beach Resort Restaurant. J.J. loved the outdoor life of South Florida. It was not unusual to see him surfing or helping at the annual Bahia Cabana golf tournament. He was a generous friend and loved meeting new people. Music gave him great joy and he looked forward to traveling to festivals, especially the Mardi Gras in New Orleans each year. J.J. is preceded in death by his late father Patrick J. Flavin who passed away in September. Surviving are his heartbroken mother, Tish, his best friend and brother Shamus, five sisters, Eleanor Flavin, Susan Flavin-Finney (John), Julie Crawford (Harry), Kris Cauble (David) and Mary Kate Pratt (Rich), grandmother Betty Gill, aunts Mary Hurt (Darryl) and Jane Ley (Mick), uncle Steve Gill (Marina) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Private interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois. Memorials may be made in J.J.'s memory to Cardinal Gibbons High School Development Fund, 2900 NE 47 St., Fort Lauderdale, FL. 33308
