Obituary for Judith Ellen Loevy

Judith Ellen Loevy, 78, of Oak Park, Illinois, passed away on March 12, 2020 in Chicago, IL.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Judy was born at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, IL on March 2nd, 1942. She graduated Oak Park-River Forest High School Class of 1959, attended Rosary College, and was an HR Director and Consultant for over 30 years. She was not only a reliable friend and nurturer, she embodied fierce, female independence. She was a Proud Girl Scout, a world traveler, fluent in French, and she and her husband Sandy loved to spend time in Paris. She was one of the first Americans to visit China after relations began to normalize in the 1970s. She was ahead of her time, embracing a diverse set of interests, cultures and religions. She was raised Catholic, raised her son Jewish, became the first woman president of Temple Har Zion in River Forest, and was an active member of the Unitarian Church in Oak Park. She was also a wonderful cook, and an expert baker, whose cakes and pies were in high demand. Her Gourmet Club met for decades. And while Judy lost both her husband and son to cancer, she continued to be a beacon of strength to her extended family. Despite then losing much of her eyesight, she continued to work after retirement and sang strong and beautiful in the Irish Heritage Choir. Her love, perseverance and regal sense of style will be missed by so many friends and family, for whom she always had a hug and a laugh. She was a lovely woman who, when she thought something was unfair, was proud to have a mouth like a pirate. Her smile will live forever.

She is preceded in death by her loving parents Ellen Mary and Barney Goldstein; her soulmate, husband Sandor Allen Loevy; her beloved son David Harold Loevy; and her dear nephew Bill Mavrelis.

She is survived by her sisters Jean Ellen Mavrelis and Ellen Florence Boyer; her brother Robert Joseph Goldstein; her nieces Maggie Finch, Cristina Frenkel, and Eve Firestone; her nephews Tony Mavrelis, Bobby Goldstein Jr., Barney Boyer, Gabe Boyer, and Joey Goldstein; her grandnieces LiLi Finch, Hazel Boyer, Scarlett Frenkel, and Silvia Lu Boyer; her grandnephews Leonidas Mavrelis, Oliver Finch, Sam Finch, Niko Mavrelis, Kiva Frenkel, Hendrix Firestone and Theo Jaxx Firestone.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The Animal Care League of Oak Park, 1013 Garfield St, Oak Park, IL 60304.
