Obituary for Kathleen R Foley

Kathleen has gone on before us, surrounded by friends and family and the many for whom she cared in her forty-three year practice as a nurse, caregiver, teacher and counselor. At the time of her passing, on Thursday, October 27th, she left her husband, Daniel James, of Oak Park and her son, Daniel Jennings (Erin) of River Forest. Her daughter, Claire Katharine (Peter) Hansen resides in San Jose. Kathleen leaves three grandsons, Connor Daniel, William Patrick and Paul William as well as thirty nieces and nephews.

She is the daughter of the late William and Eleanor McCarthy of Chicago and sister to the late Robert and Rosemary McCarthy, William and Margaret McCarthy, and Marian McCarthy, all deceased. Kathleen is survived by her brother James (Joyce) of Niceville, Florida.

Kathleen was introduced to her future husband by the late Morrie McCarthy (no relation) and forever after they were very grateful for such a gift from a wonderful friend. Their good fortune has endured from that time ‘til now, some fifty years.

She took her baccalaureate and Master’s degree from St. Xavier’s University in Chicago and utilized many of her skills teaching at Northwestern and UIC Schools of Nursing, but it was in her last fifteen years at Hines VA where her gifts were best applied. Her efforts to aid her clients and their families as each struggled with dependency issues and PTSD were rewarded by still greater efforts with talented and caring colleagues who dedicated their healing profession to helping these Veterans overcome great difficulties and return to a healthy and productive life after trauma.

Active in ecumenical and interreligious affairs, Kathleen was a happy and interested member of the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue Group, part of Chicago’s religious fabric for many years. In Oak Park she helped her community to advance mutual understanding of religious and social issues.

For her efforts and activities she was named a member of The Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem by the late Pope John Paul II. Toward the ending years of her nursing career she was named VA’s Women of the Year. Kathleen was conferred membership in Sigma Theta Tau and was active in this Honor Society for Nursing, mentoring many. She served as president of the Chicago chapter. She took these unsought honors in stride and continued with her profession.

Friends will gather at St. Giles Catholic Church, 1045 Columbian Avenue, Oak Park, on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 4pm – 6pm followed by a celebration of the Liturgy of the Passing to Eternal Life at 6pm. If you are able, come and join us. Be prepared to sing.
