Obituary for Lawrence "Larry" R. Hosty

Lawrence (Larry) R. Hosty, 74, peacefully passed into eternal life on Christmas Day. Larry was the beloved husband of Nancy (Madden), his wife of 17 years; loving father to Katharine (Katie) and Lawrence (Larry) R. Hosty, Jr. Larry was preceded in death by his former wife, Jane Hoyne Hosty. Larry was the devoted son of Thomas E. and Joan Ryan Hosty; dear brother to Thomas (Sue), P.J. (Kathy), the late Robert (Peggy), Terry (Ellen), John (Lissa) and Della; cherished brother-in-law to all in the Hoyne, O’Brien and Madden families; fond uncle, great-uncle and godfather to many.

Larry grew up in River Forest and attended St. Luke’s Grade School. He graduated from Fenwick High School and St. Norbert’s College. Following graduation Larry spent six years in the Army Reserves. Larry had a varied career history, working as a trader on the Chicago Board Options Exchange, a Funeral Director in Dayton, Ohio and finally, retiring after 25 years with the Cook County (Illinois) Purchasing Department.

Larry was a voracious reader who had a vast knowledge of world history, and also enjoyed a good mystery. Larry loved fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and spending time at his family home in Michigan, visiting with his family, gardening, and walking the beach. He especially looked forward to the coffee klatch every Saturday morning in the Big House. Larry was an amateur guitar player and loved the music of the Dooley Brothers, The Kingston Trio, Sinatra and many other artists.

Larry enjoyed making frequent trips to spend time with and celebrate special occasions with his kids. He was very proud of the many accomplishments Katie and Larry achieved.

Larry was a kind and gentle soul that made friends wherever he went. Once you were a friend of Larry’s, you were a friend for life.

We will miss Larry beyond measure. We are comforted by his reunion with the many family members and friends that have gone before him. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held in Larry’s honor, at a later date, when it is safe for everyone to be together. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association would be appreciated.
