Obituary for Margaret H. Even

Margaret Even of Carol Stream, widow of Chicago patent attorney Francis A.Even, died Jan. 18. She was 91. Mrs. Even had lived at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream since 2006. Prior to that she and her husband lived in River Forest for more than 40 years. Mrs. Even was active in the community, serving on the board of directors of Hepzibah Home and the West Suburban Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteering with the Infant Welfare Society, the Girl Scouts and other organizations. She was a volunteer in River Forest schools when her daughters were students, and again with her granddaughter's generation. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of River Forest. Margaret Hope Herrick Even was born March 2, 1920, to Dorothy Rich Herrick and George Wirt Herrick, the eldest of their four children. The family lived in Clinton, Ill, where Mr. Herrick was a lawyer in private practice and served for a time as state's attorney of DeWitt County, as well as a trustee of the University of Illinois. In 1938 Margaret enrolled at the Champaign-Urbana campus and joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. It was at the Theta house that she met her future husband, an engineering student who worked as a waiter there. They married in 1945, when Mr. Even returned from service in World War II. Their marriage thrived for 62 years, until Mr. Even's death in 2008. Early in her marriage Mrs. Even lived in Washington, D.C., where she worked as an aide to a U.S. senator while her husband attended law school. After his graduation, he joined the Chicago firm that now bears his name (Fitch, Even, Tabin & Flannery) and the couple settled in Oak Park, and later River Forest. Mrs. Even enjoyed bridge, tennis, and playing the piano, a hobby she continued to pursue into her 80s. She was a gracious hostess who enjoyed entertaining and an enthusiastic photographer of family activities and events, always wanting a camera near at hand. Survivors include daughters Janet Even (Thomas Osborne) of Redmond, OR, and Dorothy Even (Frank) Cermak of Stuart, FL; granddaughter Jennifer Tyma (Chris) Sisco of Phoenix, AZ and greatgrandson Adrian Sisco; grandson Frank Cermak-Ochoa (Marcos) of Hollywood, CA; and caregiver Gereltsetseg Joodgoi of Carol Stream. Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 7551 Quick Ave., River Forest. The family requests any memorials be made to the Covenant Care Hospice, 3755 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174.
