Obituary for Marilyn Lucas Ross

Marilyn Lucas Ross died in Oak Park, Illinois, on April 19, 2020, at age 93. Marilyn grew up in Chicago and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1950 with a major in Physical Education. There she met her husband, Howard Rentchler Ross, who would become a career Army officer.

The couple moved around the world with their three children and retired to Arlington, Virginia, where Marilyn remained after the death of her husband in 1993. She lived in the Vinson Hall retirement community for military officers for 20 years and then moved to Chicago in 2018 to be near her daughter and son-in-law.

Marilyn found excitement in moving to new places. She prepared by gathering books about the area and sharing her new knowledge with the children. Once there, they would tour the local museums and shops, and collect toys, furniture, pictures, and books from the region.

Marilyn enjoyed staying in touch with friends near and far. She began writing a pen pal in Belgium at age 21 and continued through marriage, children, grandchildren, and widowhood until finally meeting her pen pal face to face in 2005.

Marilyn especially enjoyed volunteering at military thrift stores around the world and, later, at Vinson Hall. Her additional volunteer efforts benefitted Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Veterans Administration cancelled stamp rehabilitation project, and Clan Ross America, which she served as Membership Secretary for ten years.

Marilyn's ashes will be laid to rest with her husband, Colonel Howard R. Ross, who was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in 1993. The grave is surrounded by mature oak trees and graced by the nearby Netherlands Carillon. After travel restrictions have eased, the family will gather there to pay their final respects.

Marilyn is survived, and missed, by three children, as well as her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends. Though she died during the COVID-19 pandemic, her death was due to heart issues. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the USO. Personal notes may be sent to: Ross Family, PO Box 6193, River Forest, IL. 60305.
