Obituary for Marvin R. Schlichting

Marvin R Schlichting, age 92, of Willow Springs, Forest Park, and River Forest; beloved husband of the late Jane; loving father of Nancy (Robert) Blackwell and Greg (Kirstin) Schlichting; cherished grandfather of Ryan, Evan (Shelbie) and Tara Blackwell, and Mason and Carson Schlichting; great-grandfather of Noah Robert Blackwell; dear brother of the late Henry, Glenn and Lorraine; fond uncle and great-uncle of many.

Marv grew up in Forest Park, attending St. John’s Lutheran Church and School and Proviso High School. Marv served in the Army in Germany from 1946-1948 and played the French horn in the 5th Constabulary Regimental Band. Marv earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Valparaiso University, his Master’s Degree from Notre Dame as a recipient of the National Science Foundation grant, and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina. Marv began his teaching career at a Lutheran High School in Texas, teaching math and coaching several sports. Marv’s brother, Glenn, encouraged Marv to come home to meet Glenn’s teaching colleague, Jane Main, from Muncie. By 1954, Marv moved back to Forest Park and began teaching at Walther Lutheran as their first math teacher. Marv also did college counseling and coached basketball. He was a respected coach leading his teams to several league championships. Marv taught at Walther until 1967, and continued to substitute teach when needed into 2009.

On August 17, 1956, Marv and Jane were married at St. John’s in Forest Park. For several years they served as house parents in the Lutheran Children’s Home in Maywood, living in the Home with Nancy and Greg and caring and advocating for the resident children. Marv and Jane were instrumental in establishing the Bronco Thrift Store as an outreach and source of income for Walther. From 1967 through 1996, Marv was full time faculty at Triton College where he taught mathematics and authored two algebra books. Family members starred in all the word problems. After over 5 decades of dedicated teaching, Marv and Jane retired and enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. They were supporters of the arts, their church and schools, and civic organizations. They greatly enjoyed the German singing choir and the friends made there. Marv could be found on many summer days, watching the White Sox, eating two hot dogs and a bag of peanuts, just as he would have at the ballpark.
