Obituary for Mary Frances Hegarty

Mary Frances Hegarty, of Oak Park, died February 14, 2021 aged 89. Mary Frances was born and raised in Chicago and attended St. Angela grade school. During her grade school years she worked in the church sacristy. She also attended Siena High School which was located at Central and Washington in Chicago. In high school Mary Frances was the editor of the school newspaper and worked at Schlosser’s Bakery. She graduated Valedictorian of her high school. Following high school she attended Mundelein College and DePaul University. In college she was employed in the quality control department at Kraft Foods.

She met her future husband Edward while double dating other people. They met next “by accident” at a Sunday evening church dance for high school kids. After the dance Edward gallantly escorted Mary Frances home, about 18 miles away via multiple street cars. Edward and Mary Frances married in 1953 and selflessly raised 11 children. They were faithfully married for 65 years. In the midst of caring for the children Mary Frances managed to employ her sewing skills and often clothed her girls in outfits she had made. After sending her youngest child off to school, Mary Frances started working for Sears in the custom drapery department where she put her creative abilities to use. She took great joy in giving gifts to her children including the stained glass pieces that she herself created after retirement. Her family cherish the gifts for the love they represent. Mary Frances had an appreciation for nature and traveled to many of the National Parks in the US with Edward and their children. She also raised canaries. While living in Chicago Mary Frances was involved at St. Angela Church. While they lived in Oak Park Mary Frances and Edward attended St. Giles Church. For a number of years she delivered communion to those who were homebound. Her faith was a vital part of her life. She was a kind and loving woman who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Beloved wife of the late Edward H.; loving mother of Maureen (Dan) Kruszynski, RoseAnn (Jim) Vonesh, Kathleen (Robert) Burdett, Edward (Cindy), Michael (Diane), Mary Pat (the late Joe) Williams, Daniel (Kathy), Patrick (Catherine), Mary Rose (Gerard) Crimmins, Terrence, and Christopher (Amy Nelson) Hegarty; cherished grandmother of Megan and Jim (Kristina) Vonesh, Victoria Burdett, Diane (Brian) Bell and Natalie Burdett, Naomi and Aidan Hegarty, Logan and Tristan Williams, Ryan and Shannon Hegarty, Erica (Thurman) Fogleman and Stephanie Hegarty, Jared and Christopher Crimmins; cherished great-grandmother of Matthew, Caileigh, Grace and Sammy, Allison and Jimmy, and Kaylan, Lia, Myles, Neo and Audrey; dear sister of the late Rev.
