Obituary for Michael J. Fogarty

Michael Joseph Fogarty, Jr, age 78, of Atlantic Beach FL, formerly of Chicago, died peacefully June 12. Beloved husband to Marlene (ne Slavin); proud father of Michael J. III (Susan), Martin (Ellen) Fogarty and Moira (Eric) Nield; adored grandfather to Jessica, Emmaline, Hannah, Eleanor, Bridget, Sheila and Tommy Fogarty, Catherine, Marty and Conor Nield; loving Uncle Mike to many nieces and nephews. Also survived by his brother, John Fogarty, and sister, Eileen Powers. Preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Nellie, his aunt Catherine O'Sullivan and sisters Mary Ann Barron and Kathleen Fleming. Michael was a proud graduate of Fenwick High School ('54) and the University of Notre Dame ('58). He began his career in advertising at the Chicago Tribune, a career that spanned a forty year period spent mostly in Chicago but also in Hammond IN and Jacksonville FL. Loyal to his Democratic roots, he was Precinct Captain in the 47th Ward. He served on the Board at the Inspiration Cafe, the Parish Council of Immaculate Conception, and as President of the North Florida Notre Dame Alumni Club. Michael wore his Irish heritage as a badge of honor and greatly enjoyed Irish music, Irish writers, his Irish wolfhounds and, of course, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. His travels took him from China to Europe but always to Ireland and a stop in County Kerry, the birthplace of his parents. However, his most cherished spot was the cabin in Spooner WI and his greatest joy was the time he spent with his family. Visitation Thursday 3 to 9 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park. Funeral Friday 9:15 a.m. to St. Giles Church for Mass at 10a.m. Interment private.
