Obituary for Patrick J. Flavin

Patrick J. Flavin, age 74 of Ft. Lauderdale and formerly of River Forest; passed away peacefully on September 19th surrounded by his loving family; beloved husband of Tish; loving father of Eleanor Flavin, Susan (John Finney) Flavin-Finney, Julie (Harry) Crawford, Kris (David) Cauble, Mary Kate (Rich) Pratt, J.J. Flavin and Shamus Flavin; cherished grandfather of Tyler and Abby Cauble, Graham Crawford, Olivia and Audrey Pratt; dear son of the late Patrick and Eleanor Flavin; cherished brother of the late Michael Flavin; devoted nephew of the late Mary Flavin; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Pat was born and raised on Chicago's West Side and graduated from Austin High School. He attended Loyola University, worked for IBM, then ventured out on his own and started up American Data Center in the mid 1960's as a computer software design firm. Through the years (ADC) expanded in various enterprises including cable TV systems, printing, horseman's bookkeeping and being a prime contractor for the New York Off Track Betting Operations in the early 1970's, the first of its kind in the country. In 1979, Pat purchased a majority interest in Maywood Park Race Track. For over 15 years he owned and operated a Kentucky horse farm, attended Kentucky Derbys and raced horses in the US, UK, Ireland and France. Pat's horse, Doc Ryan, won the Edinburgh Gold Cup in Scotland and for the first time in 180 year history, the cup resided in the US. Pat relocated to Ft. Lauderdale in 1993 and has maintained business activities in South Florida, one of them being The Bahia Cabana Beach Resort. Pat lived life to the fullest, Butch McGuire's, a legendary pub in Chicago, closed its doors to the public, on a busy Saturday night, for Pat's private 50th birthday party. Pat left a host of beloved friends and too many of his business and social friends, please know that he cherished and valued your friendships very much. Visitation Thursday, September 26th 4 to 8 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park. Family and Friends are asked to meet on Friday, September 27th at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1530 Jackson Ave., River Forest for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Maryville Academy are appreciated.
