Obituary for Philip Southworth

Philip Southworth, a five year resident of Oak Park, passed away on October 27, 2015 at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. Phil was born in Evanston on January 4, 1923 to Arthur Bodine and Helen Southworth. He graduated from Evanston High School and Grinnell College. After his military service he married Mary Jane Brown in September of 1945. After a short time in Buhl, Idaho they raised their six sons in Franklin Park and Hoffman Estates. After college he began his career as a physics teacher which he continued until his retirement in 1979. In retirement he and Mary Jane lived in Florence, WI in a house he proudly built himself. In Florence he continued with the activities that enriched his life: enjoying nature, gardening, civic activism and a list of hobbies too numerous to include. After Mary's death he moved to Brookdale Oak Park, in Oak Park, IL. There he began a new life fully engaged in a radical's battle to fight the good fight. All connected to him know he lived a good, long, and productive life working for what he believed in. He is survived by his children Donald (Marilyn Cantisano) of Oak Park, IL; Thomas (Linda) of Horicon, WI; Richard (Barbara) of Hanover Park, IL; Robert of Minneapolis, MN; and David (Joan) Edina, MN; his grandchildren: Neil, Luke, Deborah, Julie, Andrew, Rebecca, Steven, Christopher, Catherine and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his wife and his son Karl (Jessica). Donations in memory of Philip Southworth can be sent to: Friends of the Wild River Interpretive Center, Attention: Lori Moore, 5628 Forestry Drive, Florence, WI. 54121.
