Obituary for Ruth Alberta Barker

Ruth Alberta Barker, born March 18, 1927 in West Suburban Hospital to Gustav and Albertina Litke, joined the angel choir early Christmas Morning, 2020. Gloria In Excelcis Deo! She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, James W. Barker, by her sons Lloyd (Mary Kay), and James Jr. (Suzanne), her daughter Jane (Melinda Haag); by her granddaughters Melissa Bobinski (Josh), Julie Lietz (Greg), and Anne Barker; by her great-granddaughters Kherington Bobinski and Lindsey Jo Bobinski. She leaves many nieces and nephews with very fond memories of their loving Aunt, and hoards of neighbors and friends to whom she has extended her love and kindness over the years.

Ruth was baptized at St. John Lutheran in Forest Park. She attended elementary school there, as did her future husband, in the grade ahead of her. She graduated from Proviso East High School in 1945, and began secretarial work at Hines Veterans Hospital. Jim Sr. finally caught her eye in the choir loft, and they married at St. John, February 3, 1951. They moved into a bungalow in Forest Park and started their family.

Ruth stopped working for a wage and began her lifelong labor of love. She devoted her life to being an awesome Mom, Wife, and friend. The family moved to River Forest in 1964. Ruth was active in St. John altar guild, sewed Chrismons for the church Christmas trees, and spent countless hours keeping her family fed, clean, and comfortable. Selfless hours. She had a robust and loyal circle of friends too. The pinochle club. Her “girls club”. The laughter and joy of friends gathering, with adults and their children growing close in shared adventures on beaches, at Cubs’ field, and at each other’s homes. She created a world of love and joy and care. And she found a beautiful new church home at Grace Lutheran when in her late 70’s her beloved St. John was no longer as welcoming to her family as she needed it to be.

Ruth was a warm, beautiful and caring person who lived a good and true and Christlike life. She loved and welcomed friends and strangers alike. She supported her church, her kids, her friends, neighbors and her husband. She gave her love, hard work, hearty meals and and her support to so many. God has acquired a fierce, dedicated, strong and loving Angel.

Private services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest followed by burial in Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Grace Lutheran Church (graceriverforest.org) are appreciated.
