Obituary for Sarah Miller Caldicott

Sarah Miller Caldicott (Sally) died unexpectedly at her home in Boca Raton, Florida on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Sally was born December 27, 1957 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Sylvia Lucas Miller and Richard H. Miller.

She attended Whitefish Bay High School, graduating in 1976. During her years in Milwaukee, she studied piano at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music as a student of Adelaide “Miss B” Banaszynski, which instilled in her a deep and abiding love of music. Following high school, she attended Wellesley College from which she graduated in 1980, majoring in History and English. During her college years, she also studied the harpsicord, and often performed as the college accompanist for visiting musicians.

After college, she entered the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, from which she graduated in 1984 with a Master’s degree in marketing.

Her business career included positions at Quaker Oats and Helene Curtis, where she served as Director of International Marketing. Following her employment career, she established StarWaves Marketing, her own firm designed to serve the marketing needs of small companies.

She was a great grandniece of Thomas Alva Edison, and after long years of studying Edison’s career she wrote Innovate Like Edison with co-author Michael J. Gelb, and began a career as a consultant to major businesses, including some Fortune 500 companies, promoting Edison’s innovation techniques and strategies. This led to her second book, Midnight Lunch, of which she was the sole author, and which expanded on these techniques and strategies. This was followed by her e-book Inventing the Future: What Would Thomas Edison Be Doing Today? She became the founder and CEO of The Power Patterns of Innovation which promotes the application of Edison’s methods to modern business. Through this focus on innovation, she developed an extensive speaking and lecturing career, and conducted numerous seminars focused on best practices to innovate.

In 1984 she married Brian Caldicott, with whom she had two sons, Nicholas and Connor. She and Brian were divorced in 1993. Sally moved then to Weston, Florida, founded her StarWaves Marketing business, and lived there with Nick and Connor for an extended period of time. In 2006 she moved back to Illinois, and lived for many years in Oak Park, where she met, and in July of 2012 married, Wayne Myers, the Senior Pastor of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. The marriage also brought Sally to the role of step-mother to Wayne’s twin sons Daniel and Taylor. A few years later she and Wayne moved to Boca Raton, Florida when he became Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach – The “Pink Church.”

Sally was a kind and affectionate soul who led her life with enormous compassion and contagious optimism. She was an accomplished musician, author, international businesswoman, and a loving wife and parent. She is survived by her husband Wayne, her son Nicholas (Alexa), her son Connor, her step-sons Daniel and Taylor, her sister Cindi Smith (Paul), her brother Richard H Miller, Jr. (Pam), her parents and her step-mother Miriam Reading, and her former husband Brian Caldicott (Dawn). Sally is further survived by five step-sisters Rebecca Howell (John), Lindsey Korth (William), Mathilda Wheeler (Andrew), Ann Reading, and Elizabeth Reading (Keith) as well as numerous other relatives.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Chautauqua Foundation, Chautauqua, NY; Wellesley College; Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College; First Presbyterian Church of Boca Raton, Florida; the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church of Oak Park, Illinois; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
