Obituary for Thomas Jerome Pokorny

Thomas Jerome Pokorny passed away suddenly on January 6, 2020. He
was born in Onawa, Iowa and spent his childhood years growing up in
Harlan, Iowa. Tom attended Creighton Prep Jesuit High School in
Omaha, Nebraska, and then went on to earn a degree in History from
the University of Illinois/Chicago. During the Viet Nam war Tom served
as a commissioned officer in the Intelligence branch of the U.S. Army.
After the war Tom worked for many years at the offices of Blue
Cross/Blue Shield in downtown Chicago. He spent his later years
studying the philosophy of great world teachers and, of course, fishing.
Tom had a lifelong commitment to new ideas and to fostering a spirit of
open-mindedness in the world in which he lived.

Tom is survived by his daughter Amy and her husband Philip Kiley; his
daughter Carey and her husband Fernando Garron; his grandchildren
Zachary, Nicholas, Nolan and Grace Kiley, Alex, Luke and Gabe Garron;
his sisters Marie Pokorny Thompson, and Cathy Pokorny Lewis; his
brothers Philip Pokorny and Paul Pokorny; and his mother Mary Belle
Pokorny of Harlan, Iowa. Tom was preceded in death by his father,
Andrew Pokorny. He will be sorely missed by his ex-spouse Mary
Pokorny and all the friends who held him dear.

A funeral Mass will be held at St James the Apostle Church, 480 S. Park
Blvd. in Glen Ellyn on January 17 at 10:00 a.m. For those who wish to make memorial donations, please send to Wounded Warrior Project, 230 W. Monroe St., Suite 200, Chicago, Illinois 60606.
