Walter “Hub” Cheely, USMC veteran, 95, of River Forest. Beloved husband of the late Edith, nee Orlandino; loving father of Dan (Pat) and Bob (Cindy) Cheely, and Sue (Bruce) Stopka, and the late William Cheely; cherished grandfather of Mary Elizabeth (James) Hill, Daniel JM (Cason) Cheely, Katie (Daniel) Wasserman, Laura (Anthony) Gualandri, Anne-Marie (Michael) Coe, Thomas (Catherine) Cheely, Susan Cheely, Michael Cheely, Billy Cheely, Robert T. Cheely, and Meredith Stopka; great-grandfather of 17; fond brother of the late G. Williams Cheely; uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Walter authored three books, ‘Tiana and the Sacred Flame’, ‘1st 90 MM AAA Gun Battalion in Korea’ and ‘Vignettes of Greene County, IL 1920’s & 1930’s’. He wrote and lectured on many historical matters. Walter was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greene County and Illinois Historical Societies. Walter was especially well versed in matters of Native American history and lore as well as early history of Chicago and Illinois. Lifelong lumberman, BSE degree in forestry, gave many lectures and lessons regarding the history of the use of wood. Walter worked for Hines and Moser Lumber Companies. Decorated veteran, marksman / sharpshooter, and commissioned officer in World War II in the Pacific Theater, also held rank of Captain during overseas service in the Korean War. Avid genealogist. Did the crossword puzzle every day until the day he died.
Visitation Friday, January 5th from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., at Drechsler, Brown, & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park. Prayer service Saturday, January 6th 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Luke Church, 7600 W. Lake St., River Forest for a 10:00 a.m. Mass. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
