Obituary for Kenneth Radnitzer

Kenneth Radnitzer, age 91, a lifelong resident of Oak Park, passed away on January 1, 2018 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Mr. Radnitzer was born in Oak Park, IL on February 7, 1926 to the late Adolph and Margaret Radnitzer.

He grew up in Oak Park and attended school here until eighth grade and then transferred to Northwestern Military Academy, (now Northwestern-St. John Military Academy). Following graduation, he was drafted into and served with the U.S. Marines in WWII. During the war he served with the 5th Regiment in the 1st Marine Division as a demolition expert. During the war he was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart while fighting in Okinawa. When the war ended in Okinawa, he was sent to China as part of the occupational force. After the war went to Knox College on the GI Bill and majored in business administration. While at Knox College, he was in ROTC and commissioned as an officer. Mr. Radnitzer also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a platoon leader with the 31st Regiment of the Army’s 7 infantry Division. While a member of Company F of the 31st Regiment, he received the Bronze Medal with the letter V for valor.
In 1955 he married Ruth Elizabeth Froyd in the Austin Covenant Church in Chicago, IL and had a family of three boys, while residing in Oak Park. While the three boys were growing up, he served as a Cub master in Pack 22, and after several years, he took on the job as Scoutmaster of Troop 40. During the summer months, he coached various T-ball teams in Oak Park and in the winter months he worked with the church’s basketball team.
He worked at a variety of banks in the Chicago area as a bank auditor. He retired from banking and was a real estate agent in Oak Park area. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after serving for 26 years in various units in the Active Reserve.

Mr. Radnitzer was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Villa Park, IL, where he served as Chairman of the church several times and served on the Board for many years in various capacities.
He was very active in the Oak Park Optimist Club and Oak Park Runners Club. He ran hundreds of 5k races and he ran his first and last marathon at age 60!
He was very involved in the lives of his sons and always enjoyed being with his family. He was a very patient and wise father, always finding ways to support and guide his sons.

He was a very faithful to his wife and served a God who reminded him how lucky he was to be alive. We miss him.

Isaac (Rachel), Hannah and Abigail Radnitzer, and Joshua (Jessica) and Kelly Radnitzer; brother of the late Edith Radnitzer.
Visitation Sunday 2 to 6 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park where services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. Interment Glen Oak cemetery.
